Chapter Sixteen

Monday Evening

“Well… how did it go?” Libby asked after they had finished a dinner of linguini smothered in clam sauce, that they washed down with a bottle of Chianti.

Everyone was feeling satisfied and mellow. Bev loaded the dishwasher and waved away any help from Libby or Clare. Tom took the boys upstairs to tuck them in bed.

Bev shot a look at Clare. “Considering Clare got us thrown out… Other than that, just peachy. We had to cool our heels in the van until Stan and Clay gathered their little group and joined us.”

“Was Stan upset with you, Clare?”

“I don’t think he knew. It was a polite request to leave from Leslie’s brother, Gordie Peters. They both overheard the questions I put to Ed Bloom and saw the reaction I got from him. Ed was pretty upset with me. I hit a nerve. Maybe I shouldn’t have pushed him so hard. He is grieving, but I didn’t know when I’d have another chance.”

“Details. Give me details, and don’t leave anything out.” Clare told Libby about the conversation and the happenings at the memorial service. Then Bev took over and filled Libby in what was said on the ferry ride over with Clay.

“We can cross Clay Fuller off our list, and I would think Jane Fuller as well. She wouldn’t want to have a nasty murder of passion ruin her social standing. All the sympathy will be on her side anyway, and Clay will come off as the bad guy. She’ll keep all the friends, and with Addie gone he’s out in the cold,” Libby said.

“So, where does that leave us? I’m so damn confused right now I don’t know which end is up.” Bev refilled everyone’s wine glasses. “How are we ever going to figure this thing out? Jill Radcliff, Ed Bloom, the Chandlers, and the mystery person Addie had her meeting with that night.”

Tom stood in the doorway listening to them. “Have you checked Addie’s datebook?”

“Yes, I checked her datebook and the appointment calendar on her computer,” Libby said. “There was nothing listed on the calendar in her computer for two weeks prior to her death.” Libby opened the book. “There are two entries on the day of her death. Labor Day @ the farm is written across the page, and then ??POP?? scrawled down toward the bottom of the page and underlined several times.”

“Maybe it isn’t a word. What about an acronym for something, or someone’s initials? The question marks, like she was questioning something.” Tom reached for the book.

“When I checked back, she would use initials quite a bit, but she interchanged them with names too,” Libby said. “She would put Clay, and then sometimes CF. I assumed she meant Clay Fuller. So there really isn’t a pattern of how she noted things. You’re in here too, Clare. Would you remember when you met with her?”

“Let me see.” Clare flipped back through the book. “Yes, I remember these times. She did use my name and my initials sometimes.
