Chapter 11

“Did you get the guy?” Bledsoe demanded. He came out of the stairwell full steam, already keyed up and angry.

“Let’s step somewhere a little more private and discuss this,” Erin said, standing up.

Rolf stood next to her, bristling slightly. He didn’t like the feel of this guy.

“What’s wrong with right here?” Bledsoe retorted. “Did you get the asshole or didn’t you?”

“What we have to talk about might get a little… personal,” Erin said, shooting a meaningful look Vic’s direction. Vic rolled his eyes and went back to his computer.

“Okay, whatever,” Bledsoe said.

Erin led him to the Major Crimes break room. “Do you want to take a seat?” she asked.

Bledsoe looked at his options. He had a choice of two broken-down old kitchen chairs or a very disreputable couch. “I’ll stand,” he said.

“Coffee?” she offered, closing the door. The two of them and her K-9 were now isolated from the rest of the office. Rolf stuck close to Erin. His hackles were still up. He watched Bledsoe intently.

“No. Thanks,” Bledsoe grated out. “Now what did you bring me in here to say?”

“We made an arrest,” she said. She drew a cup of espresso for herself and set it on the counter. Then she leaned against the counter and faced him. “Does the name Curtis Dahl mean anything to you?”

“No. Wait, yeah. He’s been in the news. His lawyer’s saying he was busted just because he’s Black. He’s the guy?”

“He was in your apartment,” Erin said, watching him closely.

“I knew it!” Bledsoe said. “He’s the guy from the lobby, isn’t he? The one I picked out of the lineup!”

“That’s him,” she confirmed. “He wasn’t a random intruder. He was communicating with Amelia. They were seeing each other often.”

A muscle twitched in Bledsoe’s jaw. His hands clenched into fists. Erin saw a white bandage on his right hand.

“Are you okay?” she asked, pointing to his hand.

“Huh? Oh, yeah, that happened when I hit your desk. I guess I’m stronger than I thought. Split the skin right open. I didn’t even feel it at the time, I was so upset. About my wife.”

“I get it,” Erin said quietly. “When you’re upset, sometimes you can hit a lot harder than you mean to. Did you know Amelia was seeing Curtis?”

“I already told you, I don’t know the guy! I didn’t know his name!”

“Right,” she said. “My mistake. Did you know Amelia was having an affair?”

“She wasn’t!” he snapped.

“Are you sure about that?” Erin pressed.

“I would’ve known!”

“I don’t know,” she said. “Women can be pretty sneaky when they want to be. I should know.”

“What the hell are you talking about? I knew everything my wife got up to. She couldn’t have done anything without me finding out.”

Erin nodded. “It’s funny,” she said. “That’s not what Curtis told us.”

“That jerk doesn’t know shit! She was my wife! I knew her!” Bledsoe was really angry now. “He’s lying!”

“I thought this might be difficult for you to hear,” Erin said in sympathetic tones. “But clearly it wasn’t going well.
