It was early afternoon by the time Scott wandered into the kitchen and found Jillian working at the island granite countertop. Her shoulder-length brown hair was pulled into a messy tail on the top of her head, a faded yellow smiley face T-shirt draped her curvy figure and hung past her hips, and the frayed hem of her jeans brushed the ground when she walked. Seen in the bright light of the kitchen with fresh eyes, Scott realized she was much younger than he’d assumed the night before. Her gaze flicked to him and then down again as she pulled meat from some bones.

“Oh, I hope you don’t mind. Pauline left the freezer and pantry full, so I took a chicken out of the freezer this morning and cooked it to make a pot of soup. I know I should have asked first, but…Robby?” She said the name as if she weren’t quite sure she had it right, then she nodded and continued. “Robby said to make some food, because you didn’t eat much yesterday. He said it would be okay if I stayed here for another day or two until I got things sorted out.”

“Robby is absolutely correct. I am famished and the soup smells delicious. How long until it’s ready? Or should I make something else?”

Jillian flushed a deep red. Scott bit his lip to keep from commenting. She would give his own red-headed complexion a run for blushes.

“It’s ready,” she said. Using the blade of the chef’s knife, she started scooping the chopped chicken into her hand and dropping into the stainless pot on the stove. “Can you get a bowl out of the cabinet above the dishwasher?”

Scott placed the bowls, spoons, and a couple of paper towels on the counter, before heading to the fridge. “What do you want to drink? I’m afraid there isn’t much. I guess the first thing we have to do is make a grocery list.”

“Do you think I could have one of those Cokes?”

“Of course. How about Maddie? Will she be joining us?”

“Oh, no. It’s her naptime. She’s upstairs, but I have the baby monitor on. Pauline bought it so I could bring Maddie here while I worked. Uhm…I made noodles and rice. I just pour the broth over whichever one you would like.”

“In that case, give me the pasta. I can have the rice on round two. Come on, serve us up and join me. I have a ton of questions.”

“Are you sure you don’t mind?”

“I insist. So how long have you worked here?”

“Almost a year.” She flushed a deep red again. Interesting. “Look, you might as well know the truth. I was visiting the homeless shelter in Flag. Maddie and I were barely scraping by, but I was working at Wal-Mart—just for seasonal help. My hours were cut back after Christmas and my job was almost over. I didn’t know what I was going to do next. Pauline brought some old clothes in and she started talking to me. She said she needed someone who would accept room and board in exchange for light housework.
