"Hey! Hey!" I shouted, waving my arms and running toward them.

They all turned in my direction, like a group of automatic dolls; then they glanced at each other and once more stared at me.

One of them walked up to me. I was taken aback by his stern expression. From his chevrons I could see that he was a corporal; he was clearly the squad leader.

"What company are you from?" he said.

I remembered that, technically at least, I was still part of a military organization. I saluted formally and answered: "Private First Class Tamura, sir. Koizumi Corps, Murayama Company."

"Murayama Company?" said a young superior-private who now approached us. "I thought they were all wiped out at Albuera." His face was peaked and unshaven, but his eyes, which shone vivaciously under a pair of thick eyebrows, told me that he was still on active service.

"I was in the hospital when the bombing started. I made my way here all alone."

"Oh, it was you, was it?" said the third member of the group, who was, like myself, a first-class private. "I knew someone must have been up here when we found the helmet. Where have you come from now?"
