I look out the door and see that they’re already halfway down the lane. They’re moving fast. We only have a couple of minutes, and even though the streetlight next to the entrance isn’t working, they might still see us leave the building.

‘Chrissy, Kingo and Rally — sorry, Bon, you go first,’ Josh instructs. ‘Over the fence and straight into the park. We’ll meet next to the statue of St Michael.’

‘And then what?’ whimpers Chrissy.

‘We’ll work it out,’ says Josh. ‘Leave now.’

Bon takes Chrissy’s hand, and alongside Kingo they run across the lane and climb the fence. A moment later they’re gone.

The tank starts to move down the lane and a group of Staff emerges from one of the buildings only to charge into the one next to it.

My heart pounds frantically. Josh looks at me. ‘Now,’ he says.

And then we sprint, two silent shadows, across the lane and over the fence. And then we’re in the park, running through the thick snow towards the lake and the copper statue of St Michael.
