JADE

When I blink my eyes open, Patten is standing over me, smiling.

He doesn’t speak.

Because he doesn’t, I notice the little things about him I missed before. He’s Patten, from the midnight blue eyes, to the thick russet hair, the sun-kissed skin with warm undertones, and long ropy muscles. Still a dark angel and so pretty; I think I wanted him the first time I saw him.

But the way he stands isn’t right. He slouches. His black T-shirt and jeans fit him perfectly, yet he doesn’t seem the least bit comfortable in them.

Even his smile is off. More practiced and… I don’t know, empty, at the same time slimy.

It’s Patten in the flesh, but this isn’t him.

Sitting up, I take my time sliding out of bed one leg at a time. I end up on the opposite side of him. And I stay on high alert, ready for the tiniest indication when I might need to run. “You’re not Patten.”

The man—the demon—wearing Patten’s face, widens his slick, slimy smile. “Of course I am, beauty.”

That’s another thing. Beauty? It’s like he doesn’t even know my name.

“No,” I tell him. “You are not. You are an incubus, and you slipped into my dreams to feed on me. I won’t let you.”

I don’t know where this certainty is coming from. It’s not like me to be so confident.

He moves toward me, crossing from his side of my bed so fast that this can only be a nightmare.

I scramble back away from him as I prepare to defend myself.

I’m not sure how I’ll do that when the only thing in the cell is me, a demon wearing Patten’s face, and a bed.

“You’re mistaken.” He tracks me around the perimeter of my glass cell as I feel my way around, never taking my eyes off him.

“I’m not mistaken. What’s my name?” I demand.

The demon wearing Patten’s face pauses for a beat, as if my question surprised him.

It’s more confirmation I don’t need that I’m right.

Lifting my chin, I give him my most determined stare. “Get out of my dream. I don’t know who you are, but you are not feeding on me. Get out.”

He chuckles as he pursues me. Round and round we go until we’re back to my bed again, and I scramble up it.

He lunges for my leg and I nearly fall as I leap backwards. I stumble, but I stay upright. Waiting until he’s stepped on the bed, I put my foot on the edge and shove it—and him—away from me.

The bed wobbles, he curses, and I back up when he jumps toward me.

This game of cat and mouse can’t continue for long. We’re in a small cell, and this doesn’t feel like it’s my dream.

But it’s a dream, so wake yourself up.

I pinch my arm.

The demon laughs. “No, beauty. You’re not waking up until I’ve had my fill of you, and I intend to feast.”

There has to be another way out of here. There has to be.

Think, Jade. Think.

I think of how many times I’d roll over in bed and accidentally crack my elbow on the wall beside my attic room.
