Chapter Seven

Mike was on what he hoped was the last of three days of duty in eastern Washington when the radio dispatcher informed him that he had a personal message, one the dispatcher didn't think should wait. "No, I don't know what she wants. All I know is, if I got a message from someone who sounded like that, I'd be bowling people over getting to the phone."

Although he was alone when he received the message, Mike nodded. He knew what Lory's voice sounded like in person. If anything, the tones would become deeper, richer with every mile that separated them. "Give me that number again," he told the dispatcher. "And, no, it is not any of your business."

For the rest of the day, her name and voice remained in the cockpit with him, but it wasn't until he touched down at an airfield outside Colvile and located a telephone that he was able to put an end to the questions that had haunted him while he should have been tending to business. For close to two weeks he'd been telling himself that distance was what they needed. What he needed anyway. But with her phone number in front of him, his resolve went out the window. He didn't give himself time to think before punching the numbers.

She picked up the receiver on the fourth ring.

"It's Mike," he introduced himself unnecessarily. "I got your message."

"Oh." For too long she didn't say anything else. Then she asked, "Where are you?"

"Some private airport somewhere. Making money, unfortunately. A logging operation, which should have been closed down under these dry conditions, got out of hand from what I've heard. Everyone's pointing fingers at someone else. Where are you?"

"Home. But it isn't going to last long. I leave at dawn."

Home? What was it she'd told him, that she had a place overlooking the Snake? That wasn't right. He should know where she lived. "Where are you going?"

"I forgot to ask. Keith said to pack for a week, but he exaggerates a lot. Mike? The connection is terrible."

"I know." Anger, unexpected yet real, slashed through him. He needed a reminder of what was warm and human about her and all he had was her voice. Except for the laugh, she could have been the operator. Had it only been two weeks since he'd talked to her? It felt like a year. "Are you all right?"

"Yes, of course. Why do you ask?"

"The only message I got was that you wanted me to call. What are you doing home? You weren't injured, were you?"

"Of course not." Again her laugh reached him. "You know what Idaho's like this month. Between the range lands and Rocky Mountains, it's like everything's waiting in line to catch fire. We've been fighting fires here since—since the last time I saw you. What are you doing next weekend?"

Mike, whose life was scheduled from day to day in the summer, had no idea. "Beats me. What are you doing next weekend?''

"I hope I'm going to be showing you the Snake.
