I almost ripped off Gen’s head. The amount of water she’d thrown at Firegirl would have killed her if she hadn’t evaporated most of it. The lake would be low for a while. My Drex felt a vast amount of antagonism towards my best friend, while even I was pissed. I was watching the whole thing from very high. I could see intricate details from a mile above the earth. The detail my Drex focused on was the naked Burner crouched in the steaming mud.

I watched her until she disappeared into my mom’s car, covered in mud and swirling water. I followed the car, passing between two of the Captain’s drones. They couldn’t identify me or pick me up on any of their sensors. I wanted to rip them apart just for fun. Instead, I dropped, pulling up in the woods, gliding through the trees until I landed.

I walked towards the pond, shrugging my shoulders to get my wings put away and shove my scales under my skin. I’d taken two steps without my scales before I was surrounded by a group of guys in black gear.

I nodded and pulled on my shirt. “Take me to your leader.”

“Very funny,” Vee said, right behind them. The suits parted and she stared at me. “Where did you come from?”

“Like I’d let Firegirl anywhere close to your lake without backup. I’ve been stung before.” I had. I still had a scar on my arm from the occasion I’d almost been poisoned from toxins I was not immune to. Not a lot of things could harm a Drex.

She rolled her eyes. “I had everything under control.”

“Yeah, you did. Why did you drop a lake on her? She gets pneumonia.”

Her eyebrows went up to her hairline. “Pneumonia? She’s a walking bomb.”

“That wasn’t her. That was the corpse. It was nice of her not to leave you with the body. You reward her concern with a pneumonia? That just doesn’t seem like you.”

She glared at me. “She’s going out with Tuba. Why are you so protective?”

I shrugged and glanced past her at the pond. “I’m worried about that. Tuba’s such a solid guy. What if she falls in love with him and never leaves?”

She snorted and shoved my shoulder. “Seriously, she can’t spar. I knew you couldn’t actually like a softie like that.”

“I like soft women.”

“Not her, all prickly and anti-social.”

“She’s very good with her needles, and with that kind of activity, you don’t want a huge party.”

She studied me. “Sean’s freaking out. You’re both a security risk. You shouldn’t be able to show up without some kind of warning. He’s going to spend the next month figuring out new sensors.”

“Sounds like fun. Not my kind of fun. That involves vast quantities of alcohol and very little to no clothing. Speaking of no clothing, I should probably get back to the house.”

“How do you do it?”

“I thought I’d catch a ride with you. I would have gone earlier with Firegirl, but I’ve seen her naked too often.
