ELEVEN

Bill

For the bi-millionth time, I wished I had wings. I'd done a lot of walking since hooking up with Lils and Conan. More than my poor feet were ever made for. And yeah, walking next to the river was a lot easier than some of the hell-pits we'd track-versed like, say, the Morgue. But goddamn, you can get burned out on postcard views like anything else. It sure as shit didn't do anything for the foot pain.

Where the hell's this place Tido was talking about? I thought, using my telenoculars for what had to be the tri-billionth time. He'd told me it was pretty close. I was beginning to think he had a pretty bad idea of what the word “close” meant.

Slowing his steps to let me keep up, Sid-ful just took everything in stride. The second Frank-N-Full-Of-It and Snake Boy were out of his saloon, he'd closed up for the night. When I told him where I had to go, he'd asked if he could come along after leaving Charmion a note. I figured what the hell. I'd have somebody to laugh at for being worse at this walking thing than me. I really should have known better.

“I know you ain't gettin' that much exercise back at the bar,” I growled at him. “How come you ain’t lookin’ the worse for wear after all this walking?”

He just snorted at me. “Ya tour the European shithole circuit a few times, Old Bill, this kind o' stroll's like walking through Piccadilly.”

I checked our surroundings again to see if we were anywhere close. The good news was my telenoculars finally found those fresh graves Tallis'd told me about, laid out under some trees on the path's right. The bad news was that they were still about half a mile away.

I started moving over to where the graves were.

“Found the spot, then?” Sid asked.

“Yeah, finally,” I sighed. “I still don't see why you ain't got no wheels. You can afford that damn TV!”

“You think I know how to bloody drive, mate?” Sid shot back at me. “Besides, in a town like New Botany Bay, there’s not much call for an auto, y'know?”

The stretch of land in front of the graves was double-wide open grassland. None of them stalks was tall enough to hide Mantis, never mind me. Anybody trying to lay in sneak-bush knew how to be invisible or was better at hiding from my all-seeing peepers.

“So this Lily and Tallis… they worthy to call themselves your friends, Bill?” Sid asked.

“I've loved Nips since literally the day she was born,” I told him, no messing around with my words. “An’ the fact that she still wants a total screw-up like me in her life means everything to me.”

He nodded, not saying anything but taking it all in.

“Now, Tido,” I went on. “He's a born hard-ass with an equally hard head. Sometimes you can't tell which end is which. But he gives a shit about people, which is more than I can say about his success-placement Blondie.
