Chapter Eight
We arrived in the next town over and Viktor and Dana immediately made a beeline for the shopping centre, finding a sports equipment shop.
I left the shopping up to them, figuring that I didnât have much experience with this kind of thing. I wasnât exactly a sports person.
Dana quickly filled a shopping trolley, and I hoped that she wasnât expecting me to chip in. Especially when I saw the price tag on one of the items...
âWhy do we need a tent?â I asked. âAnd are tents always that expensive?â
Dana brushed her hair from her eyes. âWe need a tent because we donât know exactly where this quest will lead us, and the tent is that expensive because a cheap one wonât survive anything but a light drizzle.â
I nodded, once again hoping that she didnât ask me to contribute. And then I instantly felt bad. Dana was only on this quest because of me, and while I wouldnât choose to pay for this stuff, she thought it was necessary, so didnât that make it my job to at least chip in?
I braced myself, pulling out my phone to glance at my banking app.
-£237.53
And I had no idea how long I would keep the 0% overdraft after I graduated. And Iâd never applied to have it extended beyond £500, so that I would never be tempted to let it get that far.
But I supposed I didnât have a choice.
I took my card out as the cashier put the items through, though Viktor immediately put his hand up and shook his head. âOh no, Iâve seen where you work, remember? Iâm pretty sure Iâve got more cash to hand than you.â
Dana turned to us, and I realised she had already paid. âYou two had better not be fighting over paying the bill when Iâm here.â She turned to me. âI supply half of the potions for our local community.â She smirked. âIâm pretty sure the local coven is pretty mad about it, actually. Especially because my potions teacher was a hedge Witch.â
She then turned to Noah and David. âAlso, I assumed I was just going to expense the Guardians at the end of this.â
Noah folded his arms. âWhat part of âoff the booksâ did you not get?â
âThe part where you couldnât lie on the expenses form, I guess.â
Noah sighed. âWeâll see what we can do, but letâs not assume any of this is going to get approved.â
âFair enough,â Dana said before looking at the large trolley full of shopping, and then turning back to David and Noah. âCan I at least trust you to carry things?â
âMe, yes. David, no. Not unless you want him to lose the ability to talk.â
âOh, right, your glamour.â She turned to David, her hands moving with her words. âIâm not saying my BSL isnât rusty, but it should be useable.â
David smiled. âThanks, but for Poppy and Viktorâs sake, Iâll keep the glamour up. At least until weâre safe behind some wards.â
My stomach twinged with guilt. I could finger spell, but that was about it.
