Chapter Eight

We arrived in the next town over and Viktor and Dana immediately made a beeline for the shopping centre, finding a sports equipment shop.

I left the shopping up to them, figuring that I didn’t have much experience with this kind of thing. I wasn’t exactly a sports person.

Dana quickly filled a shopping trolley, and I hoped that she wasn’t expecting me to chip in. Especially when I saw the price tag on one of the items...

“Why do we need a tent?” I asked. “And are tents always that expensive?”

Dana brushed her hair from her eyes. “We need a tent because we don’t know exactly where this quest will lead us, and the tent is that expensive because a cheap one won’t survive anything but a light drizzle.”

I nodded, once again hoping that she didn’t ask me to contribute. And then I instantly felt bad. Dana was only on this quest because of me, and while I wouldn’t choose to pay for this stuff, she thought it was necessary, so didn’t that make it my job to at least chip in?

I braced myself, pulling out my phone to glance at my banking app.

-£237.53

And I had no idea how long I would keep the 0% overdraft after I graduated. And I’d never applied to have it extended beyond £500, so that I would never be tempted to let it get that far.

But I supposed I didn’t have a choice.

I took my card out as the cashier put the items through, though Viktor immediately put his hand up and shook his head. “Oh no, I’ve seen where you work, remember? I’m pretty sure I’ve got more cash to hand than you.”

Dana turned to us, and I realised she had already paid. “You two had better not be fighting over paying the bill when I’m here.” She turned to me. “I supply half of the potions for our local community.” She smirked. “I’m pretty sure the local coven is pretty mad about it, actually. Especially because my potions teacher was a hedge Witch.”

She then turned to Noah and David. “Also, I assumed I was just going to expense the Guardians at the end of this.”

Noah folded his arms. “What part of ‘off the books’ did you not get?”

“The part where you couldn’t lie on the expenses form, I guess.”

Noah sighed. “We’ll see what we can do, but let’s not assume any of this is going to get approved.”

“Fair enough,” Dana said before looking at the large trolley full of shopping, and then turning back to David and Noah. “Can I at least trust you to carry things?”

“Me, yes. David, no. Not unless you want him to lose the ability to talk.”

“Oh, right, your glamour.” She turned to David, her hands moving with her words. “I’m not saying my BSL isn’t rusty, but it should be useable.”

David smiled. “Thanks, but for Poppy and Viktor’s sake, I’ll keep the glamour up. At least until we’re safe behind some wards.”

My stomach twinged with guilt. I could finger spell, but that was about it.
