Chapter eleven

~Hannah!~

She rolled, swinging and then, as her head tried to clear, rather clumsily fought to get her forty-four, which was in the holster attached to the night table on her right. Only, in the dark room, even with the projection clock giving her a dim green illumination, she struggled, not able to find the weapon for whole seconds.

Nearly ten.

Then she heard the voice again. Inside her head. Almost in the center, like her own internal monolog, but louder and with a different sense to it.

~Are you awake?~

It took her a moment, but she recognized the mental voice, being Aliza. Her friend. Taking a few gasping breaths, she nearly snapped at the woman, but being a bitch wasn’t a good look, and she was, of course, already up. Now, at least.

~I’m here. Emergency?~

It took will power, but she held her thoughts still, not letting panic influence her more than was needed at the moment. It wasn’t Hyper-Gamma’s fault that she was jumpy and had flailed around, instead of acting like a normal person. So, forcing herself to take slow, even breaths, she waited.

~We need transport. There’s a bank robbery, in Boston. A heavily armed gang has the police pinned down. People are injured. We don’t have anyone in the area, and there’s no backup, for the cops.~

She blinked, sitting up.

Then thought, taking far too long.

~Who’s awake, on duty at The Tower?~

There was another pause, as Hannah moved, gun in hand, to get her own armor on. That was in her closet, but hanging on the back of the door, so she could find it in an emergency. Everything was made slower, since she didn’t have light, to see what she was doing, of course.

Which meant, with her feet into the armored pants, which were thick, but only like three layers of heavy canvas, she stumbled like a penguin, across the room. Getting back to work on it, putting her tan outfit on over naked skin. That was rough, but dressing up properly would take too long. She was ready to move, by the time she had her face mask on, and weapons belt secured.

~I’m finding the specific location. Go to the ready room!~

Hannah didn’t actually know what that meant, but the sense of the place forced itself into her mind, almost painfully. The place was a part of her suddenly, as much as if she’d been there a hundred times. So, not letting herself pause, she put the information that made up every cell in her body, every stray electron, the location of the collection of energy itself, in that other place.

This time, for what was probably the first time, someone jumped as she snapped into place. The room echoed as if a gunshot had gone off. It wasn’t a tiny space, and they had three people in there, waiting for her. Vidya, dressed in her fighting outfit, Kata, in his own brightly colored black and red stretchy fabric thing and full mask, like her own and Gregory, who looked tense, but was in a bland outfit of his own, in gray, with a matching mask.
