Chapter Twelve
I ate my dinner that night with a slow and pensive mood hanging over me. I had made a list of the things that I wanted to fix, and I had to consider my motives in the case of each of them. Magic does not like to be used for selfish ends and the mind is prone to playing tricks on us. Sometimes we will do anything to convince ourselves that we are working for the greater good, when we are not, and itâs obvious to literally everyone except ourselves.
I put Scarlett at the top of the list. She was my daughter, and therefore I considered that anything I did on her behalf couldnât possibly be called selfish.
Next on the list was Clare. I supported her, with her knowledge and consent. She had finally replied to my text saying that she was having a day off, to recharge. I had asked if I could send her energy and she had replied with a smiley face. I wasnât quite sure how much of my magical talent she truly believed in, but she certainly appreciated my ginger teas and salves and balms.
Then there was the problem of Sister Barbara. I kept feeling her presence â just out of reach, as she flitted in and out of rooms. I felt that she was avoiding me, but she was still trying to be helpful. I found all the carrots in my vegetable basket had been peeled. And that, unfortunately, was an awful lot of carrots. I had had carrot soup for dinner, just to make use of it, and stocked a ton more of the carrots in the freezer. She needed to be laid to rest, somehow, though I suspected I would need help for that.
And finally, I was still being bothered by the idea that Mindy had been lying about Pippa Haynes. Maybe there was a good explanation for it, but I was damned if I could think of one. That, then, needed addressing too.
Four things.
I looked at my list of names, and then closed my eyes, still sitting at the table. Something warm pushed against my ankle. I bent down and pulled Iceni up into my lap. She might as well get started in her role as a witchâs cat, I thought.
Four things. That was a lot to do, when youâre using magical energy. I knew that wiccans or certain ceremonial magicians could do some rites that would raise a cone of power to be used, but that wasnât my style. As a teenager, I had joined a coven, but I had fretted about remembering the right words and when to come in with my part in a chant, and it had cost a fair bit of money, too, getting the right athame and all the other bits and pieces. I was happier with a pot of stew.
And that reminded me that I had some leftover carrot soup, and Sister Barbara had peeled those carrots for me, oh-so-helpfully, so I made my mind up and decided to start there, with what I already had.
