Chapter 23

The old, familiar scent of earth and apples filled Matti’s lungs, and the wooden steps creaked beneath his feet.

He and Levi used to spend so much time out here, along with their cousins. When they were kids, they would play in the orchard and the fields and gather eggs from the chickens every day. But, once they hit their teens, they became very fond of the cellar.

Matti glanced over his shoulder at Adam who watched him with curious eyes.

“So, one of the perks of an apple orchard,” he said, sweeping his phone light over the wooden shelves lining the walls, “is all the hard cider you get to sneak out of the cellar when you’re a rebellious teenager.”

Adam laughed. He reached out a hand to drag his finger over the dusty bottles.

“How long have these been here?”

Matti shrugged. “They’re all dated with the year. Some are as new as two years old, some are older.”

Adam plucked one off the shelf and used his phone as back-lighting. His thick ponytail had gotten wild after the hours outside. Matti remembered how soft it was, how it had dragged over his face their first night together. He cleared his throat.

“Me and Levi used to sneak down here every chance we got. We would take them out into the fields and get so stupid.” He smiled to himself in the dark. “There’s probably still a secret pile of empties out there.”

Adam snorted.

“Grab one, and we can take them back up to the porch. The newest ones are on the bottom shelf.”

Matti snagged a bottle for himself and led the way back out of the cellar. He climbed up onto the back porch and settled against the house. Adam joined him.

The nighttime temperatures had been dropping steadily lower all month. There would be frost in the morning for sure, and when Matti exhaled, his breath fogged in front of him.

He popped the top off his cider. The sour, fruity scent of it filled the air.

There was enough moonlight to make out Adam’s face as he used his thumbs to open the flip-top bottle. Immediately, foam geysered out and dribbled over his fingers. Adam’s mouth stretched into a laughing grin, and Matti resisted the urge to lick the cider from his hand.

No.

He didn’t have to do that anymore.

Slowly he reached out and plucked the bottle from Adam’s grip. Adam watched him, his eyes full of joy and mischief, and Matti raised Adam’s hand to his mouth and sucked a single digit between his lips.

Adam gasped out another laugh. It turned breathless as Matti dragged his lips and teeth up the length of it, slowly, until it slipped past his lips. Then he pressed a single kiss to the very tip of it.

“Sorry,” he said, pulling back and meeting Adam’s eyes, “some of these can get a little lively.”

In the moonlight, Adam’s lips were slightly parted on rapid breath, his pupils so wide and black that Matti couldn’t make out any of the usual turbulent blue. They stared at each other for several long moments.
