Chapter 19

L exi was clearly becoming comfortable at Chloe’s house—and with Chloe herself—because she didn’t even bother to knock when she arrived, but let herself in, followed by a more hesitant Zane. She immediately spotted Chloe sitting on the couch and hurried over to her. After dropping down beside Chloe, she engulfed the other woman in a tight hug. “This is total bullshit! There is no way in hell you killed anyone. Especially not Emma!”

“I happen to agree with you, but somehow I have to prove it,” Chloe said dryly.

“Wouldn’t it be more accurate to say the sheriff would have to prove you did for you to be arrested?” Zane asked, hovering nearby, looking apologetic and uncomfortable. “Though I agree with Lexi. Especially with as bad as you felt about how you reacted when she told you about being an elemental.”

Lexi drew back and shook her head. “You’ve been living on Salus too long, Zane. They may say innocent until proven guilty, but it doesn’t always work that way.”

“She’s right. And doesn’t take into account stuff like political pressure or frame jobs,” Chloe added. “But don’t just stand there, Zane. You are allowed to sit, you know.”

He did, but the chair he chose was meant for someone at least four inches shorter than him, so he continued to look uncomfortable. “What exactly happened? Lexi just showed up, told me Emma had been killed, that you had met Daphne, and dragged me over here.” He paused, then added quickly, “Not that I wouldn’t have come, of course. You’re my friend and I want to support you.”

Chloe’s lips twitched despite the situation. “I know, and thank you. But I don’t know much more than that. I know Emma was killed, apparently shot, and they think I might have done it because I was looking for her yesterday and own a pistol. Then Daphne showed up.” She shifted so she could look between the two of them. “Is that seriously town law? Councilors showing up to be a rep or whatever?”

They both nodded, but it was Lexi who spoke. “Yep. Just a way to make sure one race doesn’t get railroaded because of ignorance or whatever, I guess,” she said with a shrug. “I didn’t think they usually showed up so quick, though.”

“They don’t, but we don’t normally have murders occurring here either,” Zane pointed out. “I would guess that it was a combination of that and her being new that got Daphne out here so fast.”

“What can you guys tell me about her? I don’t really feel super comfortable putting my life in the hands of a woman I met for five minutes,” Chloe said. “She seemed nice enough, I guess, but…” Again, the memory of her dream surged to the front of her mind, and though she trusted these two, she kept it to herself. “I just don’t know if I want to go on how she seems rather than how she is.”

“I’ve never really socialized with her or anything. I’ve
