Knox blew out a breath as he stretched his legs out, hooking one ankle over the other. Clover glanced up at him, and he stroked her absentmindedly, wondering what the hell he was doing.

It had been three days since he saw Fiona. She hadn’t come back, and he was starting to wonder if she ever would. He stayed much longer than was rational every day, waiting on her.

Hell, he even went to her house earlier, hoping to catch a glimpse of her. Just something to reassure him that she was okay. He didn’t leave the tree line, but even so, his actions were approaching a creepy level he wasn’t comfortable with.

He really should go home. Work was piling up because he’d been spending so much time at their spot, hoping she’d show. It was time to get back to his life, such as it was.

The thought was painful as fuck, though. And it felt like a betrayal to her, even though he had no intention of giving up on her. He just wouldn’t spend hours fruitlessly waiting every day anymore.

Hell, the way he felt, he’d still be coming here when he was old and gray. The thought felt real and true, but it still blew his mind. He’d known for at least two weeks that he was falling for her. He just hadn’t known how fast and far he’d fall.

Fiona meant everything to him.

No, he wasn’t giving up on her. He just thought sitting here all day, only to walk home disappointed, wasn’t the healthiest thing he could be doing right now.

Luckily, her vanishing act hadn’t triggered an episode. After that first time they parted and he lost six straight days to his memories, it was a valid concern. He’d been so worried that he’d end up dependent on her, like she was a damned drug or something. That if she wasn’t around, and he didn’t have her promise that they’d see each other again, he’d fall apart.

To his relief, that hadn’t happened—and it made him wonder if Cody had been right. They weren’t creating an unhealthy, codependent relationship. They were just lending each other support, and maybe helping each other heal.

That wasn’t to say he hadn’t had close calls. He had one the day before, when a song that he heard constantly on his last deployment came on. But with Clover’s help, he pulled through it.

He wasn’t miraculously cured. He never would be. The battle he was fighting would go on until the day he died.

But somehow, in wanting to be strong for Fiona, he’d found strength for himself that he hadn’t known he possessed.

Clover’s head popped up as she looked in the direction Fiona usually came from. He followed her gaze, trying not to get his hopes up. They usually met midmorning, and it was late afternoon already. Odds were good that it wasn’t her.

He really should call it a day and go home.

The sound of soft footsteps came to him first, and surprise ran through him as he shot to his feet.
