Chapter 13

There’s nothing more precious than holding Brea in my lap while she enjoys the movie. It’s humbling to witness her reactions every time she has a new experience. Watching her face light up from the antics of fictitious characters in a movie she’s never seen is priceless.

She squirms several times but stills when I pat her thigh. I love how her braids tickle my nose when she twists her head around to look at me. I love even more how often she does so, her eyes wide with excitement. She grins throughout the movie. I’m not sure she’s ever smiled for that long in her life.

If I have anything to say in the matter, she’ll experience this kind of pleasure often from now on. It’s so infrequent that she lets herself relax and enjoy simple pleasures. She’s always on the move, cleaning something or scurrying around.

I want her to learn to give herself a break, slow down, smell the roses. It’s going to take time, but I’ll nudge her to care for herself every day until it comes more naturally.

We started dinner early, so when the movie ends, it’s not very late. While the two Littles who are visiting this week try to talk their Daddies into another movie, I stand, taking Brea with me.

We’re not staying. I want us to have some time alone so we can talk about everything that’s happened this evening. I also want to introduce her to a few more firsts tonight, and I want all of that to happen before she starts yawning.

I’m pleased that she hasn’t shown any signs of being tired yet. The nap helped even if she’s loath to admit it. Hopefully, she can sleep better at night in her new room under the weighted blanket and wake more rested.

She doesn’t argue with me as I set her on her feet, wish everyone goodnight, and lead her out of the theater. She even swings our arms between us, still beaming as she chats animatedly about the movie.

When we reach my cabin, she grows quiet, glancing at her own cabin connected to mine. She fidgets as I let us inside.

“What’s the matter, kitten?” I ask as I shut and lock the door.

“Do you really want me to stay here? Like, sleep here?”

I cup her face and tip her head back. “Yes. I really do. Is that causing you a lot of stress?”

“Yeah. Kind of,” she murmurs.

“Let’s talk about it. You took your nap here earlier. You liked the bedroom, right?”

“Yeah.”

I adore how she says yeah. Every time she says it, I smile inside. I know it was awkward for her at first to use such slang, but it’s becoming part of her vocabulary. If she were any other Little, I’d probably insist she address me more politely with a yes, Sir. But this is Brea. She’s not like any other Little girl. The rules are different for her.

“Come.” I take her hand and lead her to the armchair where I sit and pull her onto my lap.
