EMERALD GARNER. Thank you so much. I appreciate it and I’m sure Erica is doing a happy dance up there in heaven. She’s saying, “Go ’head, Emerald!” So let’s jump right in. As I said, victims don’t ask to be thrown into the fire. So my question is, how powerful is public pressure when someone is a victim of police brutality to get laws passed, to get policies in place?

REV. SHARPTON. I think that it’s very powerful and necessary. Because if you don’t create the climate, if you don’t create the public outcry, then it is very difficult and nearly impossible to get the laws passed. Politicians react to public outcry because that’s their voters. If their voters don’t seem upset about it, they’re not going to be pushed toward it. So you need both the legislators and you need the public. That’s why the victims who suffered this are the ones you need out in front of it, because they need to be able to look you in the face and say, “No, I’m not gonna do nothing,” and they can’t do that and think they’re gonna get our votes.
