In fact, Barbara made a point of describing Iris’ basic independence as that of a “freelance” journalist, not tethered to any media organization or university.

She didn’t want to work within academia and be a historian with the “publish or perish” dictum, and whatever group think might be imposed on you by your department or your peers if you go to conferences and you depend on them to get your accreditation to further your career in the profession. She wanted no part of that. She was always a lone ranger, like a freelance journalist out there digging up stuff and thrusting it into the limelight for people to take notice. She was a real crusader, and I liked that about her.

And that was something that I could kind of empathize with, as well. We discussed it on quite a few occasions that neither one of us wanted to become part of a large organization.
