Asha opened the front door, taken aback by the beautiful bouquet that greeted her. Zane popped his head out from behind the flowers and grinned.

“Hope you don't mind me dropping around unannounced?”

Asha smiled. “Not when you arrive with a stunning flower arrangement like that. Come in.”

Zane handed Asha the flowers and stepped inside. He laughed as Max ran down the hallway and launched himself onto his feet.

“He has a foot fetish,” Asha said. “If you stand still for too long, he'll rest his head on your feet and go to sleep. It's annoying when I'm trying to cook.”

Zane bent down and scooped Max up, causing Asha's heart to contract. The white ball of fluff looked tiny in Zane's muscular arms. Max purred and pushed his head into Zane's chest, loving the attention.

“Come through to the kitchen so I can put these in some water. Would you like a drink? I was about to make some tea, but I do have a few beers in the fridge.”

“Tea would be great. Steph's got me hooked. Did you have a good day with her?”

Asha nodded. “We hiked the Lost Ghost Trail at Perrywinkle. It's gorgeous up there. I should do it more often, but the thought of aching feet never appeals.”

Zane sat down on one of the stools at the kitchen counter; Max still cradled in his arms. “But you're on your feet all day. I thought you'd be used to it.”

“Standing around on a flat surface is one thing; hiking up steep paths is another.”

“True. I'd love to go up there one day. I haven't hiked any of those trails since we were kids. Did it work as far as distracting Steph?”

Asha looked up from the flowers she was carefully arranging in a tall vase. “Did she tell you about the accident?”

“Not directly. Jenna did at dinner last night. I spoke to Steph a bit about it this afternoon, so she knows that I know. It must have been awful for her.”

“It was, still is. It completely changed her life. She'd say it changed it for the better in some ways, but I'm not sure I agree.” She moved the flowers into the center of her kitchen table. “Thank you again. These are beautiful.”

“You're welcome. I wanted to say sorry.”

“Sorry? What for? As far as I know, you haven't done anything to be sorry for.”

Zane cleared his throat. “When you canceled, I assumed it was because you didn't want to get involved with someone who was having some difficulties coping.”

Asha's mouth dropped open. “You're kidding. Why would you think that?”

“When you canceled on me, you didn't give me any explanation. It was the type of thing my ex would do. She moved out of our apartment without much explanation. She couldn't handle the nightmares I was having or the dark mood I was in. I'm a lot better now, by the way. I still have nightmares, but I feel more relaxed within myself. More hopeful.”

Asha moved around the kitchen counter and stood in front of him.
