Nine

Two weeks without Ellie had been hard on Cam. With her trip over and his parents back in Florida, Cam was glad to be tucking his little girl into her own bed again. He kissed the top of her head. She sat up and wrapped him in yet another hug. “I missed you, Daddy.”

“I missed you, too, pun’kin.”

Ellie released his neck and lay back on the bed. She nestled her special blanket close to her cheek. “I missed Sadie, too.”

Cam nodded. “I bet she missed you as well.”

“Daddy”—Ellie pulled the covers up to her chin—“is Sadie your girlfriend?”

Cam furrowed his eyebrows. “Why would you ask that?”

“Zoey said that she must be your girlfriend since you bring her with us to places. She said. . .” Ellie sat up, scrunched up her face, and twisted her shoulders back and forth. Her voice took on a sarcastic tone. “ ‘Ellie, why would Sadie want to be your friend?’ ”

Cam shook his head and ruffled her hair as she nestled back under the sheets. “Of course Sadie would want to be your friend.”

“Zoey’s a meanie.”

“Hmm.” Cam couldn’t think of a good response. Zoey had changed so much since Tim’s death. She looked for the bad in people and said so many things she shouldn’t. The fifteen-year-old had his sister at her wit’s end.

“So is Sadie your girlfriend?”

“No.”

“Does she still want to be my friend?”

“Absolutely.” Cam leaned over and kissed Ellie’s head a second time. “Now go to sleep.”

He reached for her pink lamp with the feather shade and turned off the light. Ruffling her hair one last time, he knew he had to call Sadie. It didn’t surprise him that Kelly’s girls would think that Sadie was his girlfriend. Why else would a woman just start hanging out with him and Ellie?

Walking out of the room, he asked God to give him and Sadie wisdom for how to tell Ellie the truth. After fishing her phone number out of his wallet, Cam picked up the phone and dialed her number. A ring sounded in his ear. Oh God, what will she say when I tell her? How will I tell her? If he were honest with the lot of them, he would announce to the whole family that he’d like nothing more than to make Sadie his girlfriend.

He growled as another ring sounded through the phone line. You know better than to think that way, Reynolds.

“Hello?” His heart stirred at the sound of her voice. It had been a week since their date to the musical. Neither of them would come out and say it was a real date, but for Cam it had been nothing less. “Hi, Sadie. How have you been?”

“I’m good.” She hesitated. Cam detected the uncertainty and hope in her voice. “Is Ellie home?”

“She is.” Cam tried to keep his tone light. He wasn’t sure if Sadie was ready to fess up to her true identity. He wasn’t sure he was ready, but he didn’t see they had any other choice.
