Chapter 13

Paul placed their drinks on the table and it snapped Josh back into the moment. "May I start you off with an appetizer?" Paul asked.

"I'll have the Soup du jour," Megan said.

"Make that two, please," added Josh.

"Very well. Do we know what we will be ordering for dinner?"

Josh looked at Megan. She nodded her head.

"I think so," Josh said.

"Very well. For the lady?"

"I'll have the Grilled Pesto Crusted Atlantic Salmon."

"An excellent choice. For the gentleman?"

"Grilled Filet Mignon."

"Thank you. I'll place your order with the kitchen right away."

As Paul stepped away Megan giggled. "Could you imagine us ordering Salmon and Filet Mignon when we dated in high school?"

"Not in a million years. Burgers and fries were more our speed back then."

"Well, things do have a way of changing," observed Megan.

There were a few beats of silence between them. Josh debating whether to say anything to Megan about what was going on inside his head. He decided to keep things at a surface level for the time being and see where it led them.

"How was your first week of work at Boone & Williams?" Josh finally said.

Megan sensed Josh had wanted to say something else and then decided to shift the conversation away from where it may have headed otherwise. She decided not to dwell on the thought and move on. "Wonderful. Everyone welcomed me so warmly. And I think I am really going to love the work."

"They represent some very famous and powerful people," stated Josh. "I'm sure things have the potential to be rather interesting."

"Mostly contracts," Megan said. "Some litigation. But I like the research and details of the law. I find it fascinating. Ooh, and I did get to meet John Taynor the other day. A real nice guy."

"That was my limited experience of him as well. And Benji's first week of school?"

"The first day was tough for him. New school and kids. By the end of the week he had a new best friend and a girl who likes him."

"Wouldn't surprise me in the least," Josh said. "I imagine he can be a real charmer with the fifth grade girls."

"I hope not too much," Megan said. "He's already growing up to fast for me. It seems like just yesterday I was bringing him home from the hospital." Megan stared off into space for a moment, lost in the memory of being a new mother. "Where have the past ten years gone? Or past fifteen, for that matter."

They talked casually about all the changes in the world since they graduated high school. They spoke of their memories of being together and what it had been like for them then. The shared information about classmates they still kept in contact and ones they'd long since fallen out of touch with.

Megan and Josh enjoyed their food when it arrived. They even shared tastes off each other's plates. Megan and Josh laughed at the silliness of some things and shared touching moments of siblings' weddings, the births of nieces and nephews, and the deaths of elderly relatives.
