Later that evening, after a long nap, I walk about the large room at a leisurely pace as I begin to build my endurance.

It feels good to be clean, but I’m still disheartened that none of the bathroom windows were able to open. I tell myself not to dwell on it and to focus on finding another way to escape.

Which is why I’m pushing myself harder than I should, and I pause near one of the cement walls and lean against it, aggravated that I’m already tired and needing a brief break.

If—no, when—I escape, I’m going to have to run, and since I have no idea where we are, I might have to run a while before finding someone to help me. It’s important that I prepare myself the best that I can.

My thoughts shift to Nikolai, and my lips tighten.

Now that I’ve rested, I feel peeved with myself. When I’d nearly fallen, and ended up in Nikolai’s lap, I’d felt an attraction that I should not have felt. I’m bothered by it and annoyed with myself. Nikolai is my captor, and he still holds my life in his hands.

Attraction should be the very last thing that I feel towards him.

Yet, I’d been strangely disappointed that it was Reed who’d brought me my lunch earlier. I tell myself that the only reason I was hoping it was Nikolai was so that I could gather more information. My health is slowly improving, which means Nikolai is going to have to focus on what comes next. The clock is ticking, and I need to be out of here before time is up.

When I hear the basement door open, my head lifts from where I’m standing, and I watch as Nikolai makes his way down the stairs, tray in hand.

Speaking of the devil.

He’s still wearing the same oatmeal-colored shirt and dark jeans as earlier. At the base of the stairs, he pauses—his expression the usual mask of indifference. He inclines his head towards the direction of the small room.

He wants me to enter first, and it dawns on me that this means the upstairs door is likely unlocked while he’s down here. I straighten from the wall and obediently walk to the small room and sit down on the bed.

Meanwhile, I’m going to hold onto that useful bit of information, because I’m certain it will come in handy in the future.

Nikolai hands me the tray, and I accept it, brightening when I see the juicy burger and fries. I’ve missed fast food.

As I settle more comfortably on the bed and pick up the burger, I’m aware of Nikolai settling into the armchair, those gray orbs of his fastened on me.

Before I take a big bite of the burger, I can’t resist quipping, “Kill anyone this afternoon?” His profession scares me, but I don’t want to show it. As I chew, I watch as he picks up the board to write.

Not personally, it reads when he reveals it to me.

Which means he has men working for him.
