A FEW HOMES, nice once, gone to ruin now, dot the narrow streets behind the car wash. He’s turning down one street when he sees Chance Berryman’s blood-red Ford Raptor heading down a dead end called Dodson Court. Allan turns around in an empty driveway and creeps toward Dodson. He rolls past, looking down the street in time to see Eli getting out of the truck in front of a dilapidated two-story. Allan turns around in another driveway and heads back. Dodson Court is a cul-de-sac of six formerly nice houses with badly kept lawns and the kind of brickwork that was fashionable in the eighties. Now the hedges all need trimming, and the brick needs to be power sprayed. Some of the houses look abandoned. Everything feels exhausted and ignored.

Chance is sauntering across the front lawn of the two-story house while tapping something on his cellphone with both thumbs. Finally, he finishes and slips the phone in his pocket. He doesn’t look back as he steps up on the porch and goes inside, but through the open door, Allan catches a glimpse of Eli. And, for less than a second, he sees Lily.

He cuts his engine and rolls up behind Chance’s Raptor. He stares at the front door of the house for a moment. Shaking his head, he opens the center console next to him and reaches inside.
