Chapter Eight

Blake

* * *

Forty-three seconds. A never-ending journey of drip, travel, drip. And then begin again. A short, uneventful journey. Except for the cavern wall. It was forever marked by that short journey. Scarred by a grooved path. I had counted the journey of the water drops from the stalactite as they travelled their indented path until dripping into the small puddle below them so many times now my mind was numb. Which was how I wanted it. Now if only my heart would follow. I lay on the cavern ground, my knees hugged to my chest, and watched the tiny drops of water permanently scar the wall and wondered if the tears I could not stop were doing the same to my face.

“Blake, you okay?”

Thomas spoke from behind me, his hand latching onto my shoulder, squeezing. I tucked my chin down and wiped my face on my jeans. Please don’t ask about my tears. I have no answers.

“Yeah. I’m good. Just tired.”

“Liar.” Thomas crouched beside me. “Wanna share what’s on your mind?”

I snorted. “Sure. And after, let’s give each other pedicures and drown our worries in a gallon of rocky-road. “

The hand came off my shoulder and braced itself beside me as Thomas lowered himself to a seated position.

“If you could conjure some rocky-road right now, I’d eat it. And if painting my toenails pink was the ticket, so be it.“ He held out an MRE, opened and half consumed. “This stuff is terrible. Want some?”

“With such a rousing endorsement, how could I refuse?”

I knew I needed to eat. I didn’t really care what. MRE or five-star food would both taste the same to me right now. My appetite had disappeared when Mateo had agreed to Thomas and Anali’s ridiculous plan. I took a bite, didn’t taste it, and chewed anyway.

“You know I won’t risk him unnecessarily. Hasn’t the last couple of weeks convinced you of that?”

Yes. No. I don’t know. D: All of the above.

I didn’t speak, and Thomas sighed. “If you have a better idea I’m all ears.”

“I’m trying to come up with a better idea. So go away and let me think.”

“Oh, that’s what this is? ‘Cuz from where I’m sitting it looks like you’re having a pity party.”

I glared at him. Trying with all my might to convey with my eyes where he could stick that statement. Message received. He chuckled, stood, and offered me his hand.

“That’s more like it. I need you strong. If ticking you off is what it takes, so be it.”

Stupid, adorable jerk. I took his arm and let him pull me to a sitting position, wiping the rest of my tears off my face with my one intact sleeve.

“What is it with you and Mateo? Didn’t your twisted education teach you anything about how to treat women?”

“Mom tried. Like the good boys we were, we didn’t listen. Come on, let’s set up camp.”

He grinned, and I found myself smiling back. I followed him to the sleeping bags and rolled out four while Thomas gathered the trash from our “meal” and bagged it.
