Despite my rights as a homeowner, panic began to set in. I didn’t know all the clauses in the condo association bylaws; in fact, I had never read the bylaws. I was not aware of the rights of the condo association. I had so many questions. If the association decided to evict me and my tenants, would I still be responsible for the mortgage? What would GMAC, my mortgage company, have to say? What would I do if my condo had to sit empty? I couldn’t afford the mortgage without any rental income.

My mind raced from one scenario to another; each outcome looked grim and dismal. Even if Green left and Book and News stayed, the brothers had no documented income. On the other hand, if all three of them left, I’d have no rental income until I found a new renter.

I thought about my options, as well as my limitations, as I made my way to my first visit with Jenny, my new attorney.

I drove up and down Grand Street looking for building 200. Jenny was located in Old Town. Old Town was just streets away from downtown Lansing. Old Town was very old; the area was home to some of the oldest buildings in Lansing. The streets were still paved with brick. The buildings were small but well cared for. All in all, Old Town was beautiful.

I walked into building 200 and fell in love with the décor. The office was done in the same yellow as my condo, giving it a trendy feel. Some of the walls were brick; other sections had been cleverly painted to have an antique look and feel. I gave the receptionist my name and took a seat in the waiting lobby.

“Hi, I’m Jenny,” said an overweight, white woman with blond, shoulder-length hair.

We shook hands, and I introduced myself. I looked Jenny over. She was young for an attorney and I could tell that she was just starting out. Even though she was a novice, I liked her.

Jenny sat across from me. She was friendly but serious. She listened closely.

“They can’t evict you from your condo,” she told me after listening to my story. “That’s illegal. They’re trying to scare you.”

She read over the violations.

“Can they evict my brother?” I asked.

“No, but they can continue to cite you so that you will evict him.”

Then I understood. I was right. They didn’t want to live across the street from a house full of black men, so they were coming after me. Someone had to stop them.

“Can I handle this on my own?”

She looked at me with regret in her eyes. “Unfortunately, no. They’ve already started the eviction process. Even though they can’t legally evict you they’ve begun the paperwork. They can take this all the way to court and charge you a lot of money in the process…What I will do if you decide to go with me is contact Brian and let him know that you have an attorney working on your case.”
