Despite Flint’s absence to instruct us on the care of babies, Storm lets us know in no uncertain—and high-pitched volumes—exactly how to care for her needs.

“Here, let me take her.” Julian bends over us on the couch in the basement and gently takes the screaming baby from my arms. “Don’t worry, princess, daddy Julian is going to feed you.”

He sticks his finger into her mouth, nudging against her tongue, and she latches on right away. He winces as her tiny fangs sink in, then coos as she releases a contented cloud of pink mist.

The first time she did that, a flurry of worry had gone around that we created the first known vampire. But it quickly became apparent she’s not after blood. She just needs more energy than she can suckle off the surface, and her pointy little teeth offer deeper access. She’s not exclusive to mine or Julian’s energy, either. Anyone will do, as Tobias discovered the day she chomped onto his chin.

Our little precious has taken a bite out of pretty much anyone who’s visited. I’m so glad she’s not a picky eater, but it means anyone who wants to hold her does so at their own risk.

Love fills me as I watch Julian pace around the living room. Him becoming an official part of the family had gotten off to a rocky start, despite the acceptance from the other men. But the day Storm first misted pink, all that had changed. He might not have been there at her conception, but without him, she wouldn’t have been born.

I had slid into their lives as a temporary necessity that they expected to endure, but Julian is different, and they still aren’t sure how he fit into the dynamic.

I don’t have that problem, though. Julian’s been a part of my life far longer than the demons of destruction, and having him here feels right in a way it wouldn’t have nine months ago. I can’t believe so much has happened in less than a year. A lot of it feels like a dream, or a story I heard but didn’t experience myself.

But the proof is all around me. I glance across the large, L-shaped couch to where Kellen lounges with his legs out and his hands behind his head. The news plays on the flat-screen TV mounted on the wall, the volume off and the subtitles on. In the last two weeks, things have escalated on the Others Among Us front, with humans on both sides of the line.

The negotiations Lord Marius handled aren’t ideal, but they aren’t horrible, either. There will be registrations on the human plane, something demons are more than familiar with, and passports. The deal goes both ways, though, which is what underlies a lot of the current strife. If humans want to visit
