Chapter Nineteen
âOut with it.â Damir appeared at Joeyâs side as she sat in a corner of Dennis Ohâs enormous workroom, organizing her notes from the measurement session.
âI thought it went well.â She looked up at him, thrown by his confrontational tone. âYou had Russell eating out of your hand; he loved your ideas.â
âSure, it went well; why wouldnât it? But the whole time, you looked like you were about to lose your lunch.â He peered at her. âWhatâs up?â
She frowned and went back to her notes, hoping heâd let this go. âIâm trying to make sure this information doesnât slip through the cracks. You have everything you need from me for now?â
âA straight answer would be helpful.â He reached down and picked up the notepad she was writing on. âIâm not budging until you tell me whatâs going on.â
She blinked back tears. âPlease donât be nice to me; I donât have time to fall apart right now.â
âI saw your car on the way in.â Damir took a handkerchief from his pocket and handed it to her. âI can have one of my people here in ten minutes to hit it with a coat of primer, then you can bring it to the shop anytime you like. Iâll have my best guy repaint it and give you one of the shopâs vehicles to use while itâs out of commission.â

He listened for three seconds. âYou heard me right, and I need you here now to paint over an epithet on a car door.â Another beat. âItâs a bad word, okay? Just get over here with some primer.â
Damir ended the call. âNot the sharpest knife in the drawer, but heâs a virtuoso with a paint gun. Weâll get you fixed up and have you on your way in twenty minutes. You canât be driving around the city with that filth on your door, even in LA.â
Joey blew her nose. âSince when are you in the business of repainting used cars?â
âSince a friend of mine got jammed up by some dirtball.â
âYouâre a good guy, Damir.â She pressed her lips together to stop them trembling.
âIf thereâs anything else I can do to help, Iâm here for you. Anything, and I mean that.â He started for the door to wait for his painter in the parking lot. âBut donât let this get around. Youâll ruin my reputation.â
Joey watched while Damirâs painter worked on her car, thinking how easy it was to cover up an ugly word with a coat of paint, but that didnât erase the ugliness that put it there in the first place.
The Tao according to Joey.
She knew it wouldnât hurt to keep that in mind as she tried to understand what was happening on the job with her coworkers, to remember appearances didnât always match up to the truth.
Before long, she was on the road with a
