CHAPTER SEVEN

Flora had the morning to herself the next day; Grady had the early shift, and she didn’t have to be at the hardware store until the afternoon. She slept in until Amaretto woke her up with plaintive meows, demanding breakfast.

Her friends had helped her clean up the evening before, but there were still a few dishes in the drying rack to put away, and the counter was lined with rinsed-out cans for her to recycle. She ignored all of that as she served Amaretto breakfast and made her coffee.

Only after she drained the last drops from her mug did she feel ready to start the day. She cleaned up the last of the mess in the kitchen, then went upstairs to shower and change into a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. She might not have to work this morning, but there was some stuff she wanted to get done. First on the list was visiting Beth. She wanted to ask more about Benny’s relationship with his father and stepmother, and she was also curious about who had visited Beth so late last night. She wasn’t quite sure how she felt about the second urge -- it was absolutely none of her business who her neighbor’s guests were, but maybe Beth’s love of gossip was rubbing off on her, because she desperately wanted to know.

First things first; breakfast. She ate a slice of leftover birthday cake, telling herself she would eat something more substantial before going to work. There were some cooked hamburger patties in her fridge and one last bratwurst, along with plenty of salad. Lunch could be her healthy meal. The birthday cake came from the new bakery in town, and it was good.

After her breakfast, she pulled on her shoes and slipped her cell phone into her back pocket, then stepped out the door. She decided to walk the distance to Beth’s house; she was already feeling guilty about the breakfast of cake, and it wasn’t as if she was in a hurry. It was a nice morning, anyway; the sky had huge, fluffy white clouds in it, there was a gentle breeze that carried the scent of autumn with it, and the air felt crisp and clean.

It only took a couple of minutes for her to reach Beth’s house. She walked up the driveway, pausing to turn around and look at her property from this distant angle. It looked lovely, a white farmhouse standing in a neatly groomed lawn, the side and back of the yard lined with trees. She’d have to get a photo from this angle when she listed it; the house looked like it could have been on a magazine.

She turned back to Beth’s house just in time to see a curtain twitch. A moment later, before she even reached the porch, the front door opened and Beth waved out at her.

“Good morning, Flora! Are you here to visit? I just put our breakfast away, but if you’re hungry, I can heat up the leftovers for you.
