VARIATIONS ON THE BASIC SIT SPIN

In an effort to be creative, skaters have invented an array of different sitting positions. This should be encouraged and is welcomed by most spectators. To describe all of the variations would require at least an entire chapter, but two frequently used positions warrant comment.

The first represents only a slight variation of the basic method. It consists of bending the left leg to its maximum. In order to accomplish this, you must relinquish your arched back in favor of a hunched position and keep your right leg straight. This basic position forms the foundation for many of the other variations.

While this approach is commonly utilized in the sit spin, you should be forewarned about its drawbacks. First, the deep knee bend required can exert undesirable pressure on the knee ligaments. When the hamstring muscles press against the calf muscles, it is like a lever that is pressuring the knee to open up. Over an extended period of time, this can result in a weakened knee, in some cases leading to a serious injury. To avoid this hazard, it is important to prevent the hamstring muscles from pressing against the calf muscles. You do this by halting the knee bend just before it reaches the maximum—a move that requires exquisite control and strong legs.
