Memory Pictures

Prepare a PowerPoint slide or overhead transparency with a picture containing a large number of the target vocabulary. For instance, if the students are learning kitchen utensils, find a picture of a messy kitchen. (The Internet is a great source of these kinds of pictures, especially Google images.) It’s okay if the picture has other items in it than the target vocabulary, as long as it has a significant number of target vocabulary words.

Show the picture to the students for one minute. Then, hide it and give them time to write all the words for items they can remember. You might also choose to give them time after they have worked individually for a while to compare their list with a partner.

After a few minutes, show the picture again and check answers as a class. Draw students’ attention to the spelling of each target vocabulary word and have them chorally repeat the words you are focusing on.

If you want to make it a game, give students 1 point for each word they wrote and an additional point for correct spelling. The student who has the most points at the end is the winner.
