163 TAKE A KNEE

Whenever I catch a large fish while wading, I make the effort to kneel in the water when posing for a photo. If I’m in swift current, I’ll keep the fish in the net and move to softer, shallower water if it’s close by. If the fish wriggles out of my hands, it won’t fall far and won’t hit nearly as hard as it would if I were standing. I can also quickly dunk it and let it catch its breath if need be. It’s an easy way to further reduce stress on the catch. If I’m fishing on a boat and there’s a net handy, I’ll ask someone to hold the bag below the fish just out of the photo frame. This way, if the fish falls, it won’t smack down on the hard deck.
