"Will?"

Ari looked up from where she squatted next to the cooler, trying to organize Will's mess. Dani appeared in the doorway, looking both angry and nervous. I should leave, Ari thought, but Dani stood between her and the hallway. There was no graceful way to escape, unless she wanted to shove Dani into the kitchen cabinets.

Will paused, his hand holding a cupful of ice on its way to the cooler. "Hey, Dani." He straightened, smiling slightly. Things had been weird between them ever since she had, well, betrayed them, despite the fact that she had then risked her life to fight in Adlington with him. Ari agreed. Every time she looked at Dani, she thought, I know why you did it. You had to save your family. But you should have come to us for help instead of letting the Carules control you. From the look on Will's face, he thought that now. "Hi, Dani." Ari waved.

"Hey, Ari." Dani smiled before she turned to Will. "I was looking at your spreadsheets." Dani never beat around the bush. Just went straight to the point. It was one of the things Ari knew Will loved about her.

Dani pushed her dark brown hair away from her face, her hands nervous and flitting. "The four of you can't take that place on your own." Will opened his mouth, but she held up a hand, "I know that you are the four most powerful warriors ever and blah blah blah, but even you can't stand up to more than six hundred people."

Will cleared his throat, looking away. "There are actually five of us." He dumped the ice in the cooler and reached into the fridge for water bottles. Ari shifted her weight uncomfortably, her legs cramping.

"So you trust Tristan?"

"No. But he's got this thing with Ari." Will paused, his eyebrows furrowing as he glanced down at her. How to explain it? Even Ari didn't understand Tristan's weird loyalty/obsession. She stayed silent and let Will talk. "He'll die trying to save her. That's helpful to have on her side." At Dani's raised eyebrow, Will shrugged. He grabbed a pack of cheese sticks and threw them in the cooler.

Dani was silent for several seconds, watching him. Flushing under her gaze, Will threw random condiments from his fridge into the mini cooler. "Will, why won't you let us help you?"

Her voice startled him. He nearly dropped the relish. "Help me what? Pack?"

"No." She folded her arms and glared at him.

He sighed. "Dani, we're going to train the Prodigies. It is going to be dangerous. I don't want you to get hurt."

"You think because you're Ari's Guard that you're immune to getting hurt as well?" Her brown eyes narrowed.

Careful, Will. Answering incorrectly here could be dangerous, Ari's snicker echoed through her head, but she fought hard to keep a straight face.

He swallowed. "No. It's not that. It's just… this is my fight, Dani. I don't want to drag you into something that—"

"Your fight? Are you kidding me?" Dani exploded. Will stumbled back, smacking his hip on the countertop.
