Gentlemen: This practice, like others in this chapter, is a good remedy for Qi disharmonies that may be inhibiting your contribution to conception. It’s also a good technique for maintaining total body health. I encourage you to make Opening the Wind Gates a regular part of your health care regimen.

1.Lie on your back, in bed or on the floor, with enough padding to be comfortable. Prop a pillow under your knees to support your lower back. Take a few breaths to relax before proceeding.

2.Awaken the energy in your abdomen by loosening the diaphragm, the large muscle that supports your lungs, just under your rib cage. Starting at the lower left corner of your rib cage (the side closest to your body’s “exit,” the rectum), gently press with the fingertips of both hands under your ribs toward your navel. Continue moving your fingers along, pressing toward your navel, until you reach the area just under your breastbone. Now move down the right of your rib cage, always pressing toward the navel, until you reach the lower right side of your rib cage. As you work on your diaphragm, inhale through your nose into your belly and exhale completely through your mouth.

3.Now move your attention to the “clock” around your navel. Starting at 3 o’clock, work just around the edge of your navel, along the slope where the skin rises from the navel to body level. Use your thumb or middle finger to apply pressure on each point until you feel a pulse.

4.Press the point in a tight spiral motion. If you notice any tightness or discomfort, change the direction of your spiral. As you press, breathe naturally, filling your belly with each inhalation through your nostrils, and exhaling through your mouth.

5. After three breaths (six breaths if you feel discomfort), stop pressing the point but continue to apply pressure. Use your mind to direct warmth and comfort to the corresponding organ.

6.Release and pause to let your energy settle before moving on to the next point.

7.Using the sequence shown in the illustration (1:30, stomach/spleen; 12:00, heart; and so on), travel counterclockwise around your navel, pressing and breathing at each point.

8.When you have completed the sequence, shake out your hands and feet gently to reinvigorate your extremities, stimulate your nerve endings, and activate your immune system.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BELLY-BREATHING

Breathing from the belly—the body’s center, the focal point for digestion and emotions, and the springboard for physical movement—is vital to Opening the Wind Gates. Belly-breathing slows you down, helps you stay connected with your body, and helps you relax fully. And by taking slow, deep and soft breaths, you fill your body with oxygen and clear it of stale air. So, as you Open the Wind Gates, be sure to inhale deeply and comfortably from your belly and exhale completely, tapping into the power of life-giving breath. Note that healthy belly-breathing is effortless; if you feel you’re trying too hard, relax! Observe your belly as it rises and falls with each breath.
