If after repeated attempts the pendulum method of dowsing puts you completely at sixes and sevens, here’s a neat alternative that’s tailored to detecting ch’i. “Wise women” (often derogatorily called “witches” in patriarchal cultures) in the Celtic tradition have used a technique for centuries that’s a variation on a tool called a Schumann rod. Take two identical coat hangers and hold one in each hand as follows: With your palms flat and facing up, partly curl your fingers so they form a groove where they join the hand. Rest the center of the long side of the hanger in this groove so that the hook points down. With both hangers so positioned, press the backs of the middle joints of your fingers on one hand against the backs of the middle joints of the other. Relax the thumbs. The hooks below should now be about one to two inches apart and able to swing easily back and forth. Hold the hangers about a foot in front of you and proceed just as if you were using a pendulum. The hooks may widen their gap in response to positive energy, or they may narrow. You’ll need to experiment and find out; it is somewhat uncanny to see them move when the energy changes, and they’re highly responsive. So when you find centers of good and bad energy, consider moving the desk, bed, or favorite chair to that spot, and see how it feels. In experimenting, there is no wrong approach. The point is to learn and have fun with dowsing as well—there’s no limit to what you can discover.
