Felix

Felix overlooked the park outside his office window in Sigilis, smiling. Amara stood at the entrance of the Sapphire Serpents’ Headquarters. The morning sun cast a warm glow on her skin, sliding over her brown curls, as she spoke to the guard at the entrance. Dressed in a black shirt and a pair of loose linen pants, she was talking animatedly. Something warm sparked in his chest at the sight of her.

After they’d made love that night, he’d woken up next to her asleep in his arms, her dark eyelashes resting on her cheek. He pressed a kiss to her small, button nose, making sure not to wake her up. She was so adorable when she was sleeping. Felix glanced at the ceiling painted with beams of sunlight. The plain, depressing house looked bright and meaningful all of a sudden. Maybe because he wasn’t quite so alone.

She stirred next to him with a croaky “Good morning.”

Opening her eyes fully, she became aware of where they were, remembering all that had transpired last night. He extricated his arm from under her neck. It was sore because she’d slept on it, but he didn’t mind. She sat up, stifling a yawn. “Aren’t we supposed to return to Sigilis today?”

The bedsheet slid to her waist, revealing her high breasts. Her dark hair was tangled up. He wanted to kiss her, but he knew if they started, they’d end up having sex again.

“You look even better in daylight.”

Her eyes blinked open, and she suddenly noticed that she was naked. He sat up, trying not to stare at her. Felix moved to get up but she wrapped her arms around him and planted a kiss on his lips. He drank her in ardently.

“Shouldn’t we be leaving?” He asked.

“We have time.”

Felix’s recollection ended with a loud knock on the door.

“Come in.” He turned around and found Tranagard dressed in a charcoal shirt and black pants. His eyes were lowered.

“Good morning, sir,” he said, laying an ivory envelope on Felix’s desk. “We received this from the palace this morning.”

Felix reached out for the envelope and cut it open. A card with golden letters embossed on its surface emerged from it. “The king wants to invite us to the princesses’ birthday ball. It looks like I am to represent the Sapphire Serpents. It’s this weekend. I can’t believe they’re turning five already.”

“You should go,” Tranagard immediately said. “I heard that General Darius is going too.”

Attending social events was part of his role as the head of the Secret Service. Felix found them tiring, but he knew he couldn’t skip the birthday celebration. Besides, he liked the twin princesses.

Felix eyeballed the rest of the message. “I’m to bring a plus one. Would you like to go with me?”

“Me? I’m on an undercover mission this weekend.”

Through the crack in the door, Felix saw Amara walk in. His eyes were immediately drawn to her.

“You should take Amara,” Tranagard said, watching her movements.

His heart skipped a beat at the mention of her name.
