Two white women who had inherited their own wealth reported feeling trapped. One woman said she was very much in love with her partner, who was ten years older. He had a working-class job. Her love persisted, although it came into conflict with his abusive behavior. He would frequently shout at her and call her vulgar names. He controlled what she wore and would be angry when she wouldn’t do what he wanted. He was jealous of her friendships. He threatened to hit her and was forceful and hurtful when they had sex. He was angry “almost all the time . . . there was always something that I did.” She became angry and sad and was always “walking on eggshells.” Although she wasn’t married and had millions in inherited wealth, she was with him for a number of years and had difficulty leaving him:
