Dietary Supplements

DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS ARE a relatively small, but growing segment of the pet food marketplace. They include nutrients or other substances taken or given, usually as pills, to promote health or prevent disease. More than half of American humans take some type of a dietary supplement, at least occasionally. The most common supplements are vitamins and minerals, but people also choose supplements from among hundreds of antioxidants, enzymes, gland extracts, herbals, and plant extracts in order to improve one or another aspect of health. Supplements are marketed to pet owners for the same health reasons. If supplements are good for humans, aren’t they also good for dogs and cats? You might think so but remarkably little research has evaluated the benefits (or risks) of supplements for either humans or pets, leaving many questions about their effectiveness and safety unanswered.

The lack of evidence for benefits does not stop anyone from either selling supplements or taking them. Supplements are highly profitable. The sellers of both human and pet supplements want to market their products. Because the pet supplement market is still in its infancy, pet supplement makers are especially eager to increase sales.

Supplement manufacturers need distribution channels. Pet Naturals of Vermont (“helping pets live healthier lives”) explains why pet supply stores should sell its supplement products. For example:

• Category growth. The natural Pet health and nutrition category is growing at a remarkable 20% per year. Now your opportunity to carry a phenomenally profitable pet nutrition and health line is here.

• Highest margins per linear foot. Dedicating just 24” of shelf space to Pet naturals can generate $3000 in profits a year!
