Chapter Fifteen
Finn
Iâd never have thought Iâd miss the dingy hotel room where Iâd spent most of the last few days. It turned out, though, that there were even less cheerful accommodations.
The plastic folding chair wobbled under me next to the makeshift desk in a corner of the basement apartment, where Desmond was working his internet skills. It was mid-afternoon, and the sky was clear outside, but only a thin steam of sunlight slanted through one small, low window. A damp chill seeped through the garbage bag taped over the other, broken one. The place smelled faintly of mildew and corn chips, a combination I hadnât noticed the one time Iâd been here before, when the League had gathered after the attack on the Confed building.
I couldnât complain, though. Luisâs friend who rented this apartment had offered it to the four of us in the middle of the night after weâd fled our hotel. No one had come around to question him since that first meeting, so it seemed his neighbors werenât particularly nosy. That didnât stop my pulse from stuttering at the scrape of shoes outside the door, but it was only a couple of League members dropping in early for the meeting Luis had arranged to start in about an hour.
Desmond had glanced over at my anxious jerk toward the door. As the newcomers flopped onto the couch in tense conversation, I turned back to him. My face wouldnât have been much more than a blur to him, but his distant gaze appeared to see plenty all the same.
âLast the soldiers knew, we were in New Jersey,â he said. âEven if they figure we came back to New York, itâs a big city to search.â
âI know,â I said. We also had the reassurance that RocÃo and Sam were taking turns checking the streets outside for any sign of military movementâas well as they could with the magicâs current state. The wind outside had risen again, making the basement windows rattle and creak. When weâd watched the noon news, the reporters on every channel had given concerned commentary on the âunrulyâ weather.
What they hadnât been talking about was the video Desmond had uploaded this morning or any revised statement of intentions from the Circle. Weâd been tracking down an explanation for the first omission, and it looked like Desmond had found it.
He leaned forward to squint at the enlarged text on his laptopâs screen and let out a frustrated huff. âThereâs no sign we ever uploaded the thingâeither time. The Confed must have been watching for content with related keywords. Thatâs the only way they could have found the video and shut it down so quickly.â
âSome people must have seen it, right?â I said. âIt was up for a little while.â
He nodded. âNot very many, though, I donât think. It takes time to gain that viral momentum we were hoping for. And even the people who did see it canât show it as proof that the Dulls are magical, so I donât know if anyone else would believe them.
