Kendra turned off the highway and sped up the darkening country road. She hit a pothole and bounced so hard Baxter let out a yowl in complaint. “Sorry, buddy. Are you okay? We’re almost there, and I need you on your A game.”

It was dusk when she passed the small market and continued north. Several miles further, she saw the flashing lights of the sheriff’s car and pulled in behind him.

The wiry lawman met her at her door. “Can’t say as we’ve ever had the FBI out here in our part of the world.”

Kendra introduced herself and Baxter.

“Nice to know you.” The sheriff adjusted his utility belt. “Follow me. The vehicle is over here. No plates. I’ve taped it off, though. I knew you’d want to scour the inside for evidence.”

“Good. Thank you. For now, I’m going to have my dog see if he can pick up the scent of the missing girl.” Kendra followed the sheriff to the car parked at the edge of the field. “Who owns this property?”

“I’d have to look that up for you. Shoot, this section has been empty since I was a boy. I guess I never thought about who owned it.”

They approached the sedan, and Kendra offered Hailey’s socks for Baxter to smell once again. “Find ‘em, Baxter. Such.” He sniffed the ground in random directions, starting on the driver’s side of the car. Eventually, he circled around the back end. Baxter hesitated and threw his head up and howled.

“I’m going to take a peek inside the trunk.” Kendra pulled on a pair of rubber gloves and opened the driver’s door to release the latch. Baxter whined as he sniffed the inside of the vehicle. “I know, boy. Hailey was definitely in this car. Good dog.” But where is she now?

Kendra lifted the lid to the trunk and flashed her light inside. The compartment was empty except for a girl’s pink and purple backpack. Baxter bounced on his front paws and let loose a long howl. “Good boy. Yep, Baxter smells Hailey in here, for sure.” Kendra reached for the pack and opened it. The only thing inside was a well-loved teddy bear. With an aching heart, Kendra pulled the stuffed animal out.

Before she could investigate further, Baxter tugged on his lead. “He’s found something! Good boy, Bax! Find ‘em!”

With his nose to the earth, he followed a path with a stop-and-go pace. The land had never been cultivated and was rough, filled with rocks and cactus. Occasional wild shrubs dotted the scruffy plain. Baxter pulled her along for almost a mile before they came to a grouping of scraggly bushes clustered together. He sniffed all around, circled, and sniffed some more before he sat down and howled.

Kendra shined her flashlight into the vegetation, bracing herself for what she might find. Baxter indicated a specific spot, but there was nothing more than dirt there. Kendra peered under the bushes, pointed her beam up into the branches, even searched in a twenty-foot circle around the grouping.
