BATTLE INEQUITY

In 2000, I went to the Mulago Hospital in Kampala, Uganda, and made rounds with my African colleagues. They presented a case of a young woman who had cryptococcal meningitis and tuberculosis—and who also clearly had AIDS. And they said, “Well, we’ll give her treatment for TB and send her home.”

I asked, “What about her HIV?” And the doctor answered, “Don’t even think about it. We don’t have any drugs for HIV.” And all of a sudden, it was like, Holy mackerel, this is me in 1981, ’82, ’83, making rounds. The only difference is that we couldn’t give patients drugs then because they didn’t exist. But this doctor can’t treat the patients because he doesn’t have the drugs. Back then, we had to watch patients die. But this is 2000!

People were saying that it’s Africa; they’re not going to be able to take drugs three, four, five times a day. At the time, it was multiple pills multiple times a day for those with AIDS.

That is racism in its absolute clearest form to think that because it’s a poor country, a Black country in southern Africa, that you’re not able to make use of and benefit from these spectacular scientific discoveries.

I went back home, and that started to eat at me. We had to figure out a way to get some drugs to these people. There was so much inequity there.
