Acting Up

In the fall of

1989, I went to a nightclub in New Rochelle called Streets, and I was introduced to a beautiful woman called Teresa by our mutual friend, Fran. As soon as I saw her, I was blown away. I said hello to her, and we talked for hours. I knew that I wanted to be with her, right from that moment. I knew it was real.

I went on tour for quite a while after that, but we stayed in touch. Our first date didn’t happen until September 1990, right when the movie Goodfellas was released. I’m a huge Martin Scorsese fan, as you’ll have guessed because I keep referencing him in this book, and I couldn’t wait to see that film.

I didn’t care what else I was doing on the day it came out—I was going to see it. Teresa knew I was dying to see it, so we got advance tickets, went out in Secaucus, New Jersey, had dinner at an Italian restaurant right next to the cinema, and then saw the movie. That was our first official date.

We were inseparable from then on. Remember, there was no email or FaceTime back then, so when I was away on tour, Teresa and I used to call and write letters to each other, just talking about life and what we were doing. I remember when Anthrax was touring in Japan, I spent a lot of money on phone calls to Teresa because I needed to be in contact with her. She was my safe home.

When we got serious about our relationship, we sat down and talked about how it would work, with me away from home as much as I am. Everything was explained and agreed up front, and we began our committed relationship. I told her, “I’m going to be your boyfriend, and you can trust me. I won’t be going with anybody else.”

I brought Teresa out on tour in the early days. It was great to be with her, but touring wasn’t for her. You have to understand, when you’re on tour you’re in and out of cities pretty fast. It’s great if you’re in the band, because you’re doing press and sound checking and everything, but for everybody else, it’s terrible—you don’t get enough sleep, and the food is usually awful, and you never get a chance to see a city for longer than a few hours. So she came on the bus a couple of times, but after that, she had no intention of ever coming on tour again. I totally get that.

Teresa and I had a lot of great times with our extended families when I was home. We used to go over to Atlantic City and meet up in hotels and have a ball—eating great food, gambling in the casino, going to the beach. We’d do that for entire weekends, and we always had a wonderful time.

So here I am, in 1991—going steady and loving life. Let’s keep going. There’s a lot
