CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Though none of them admitted to hating haggis, no one was interested in eating it again. Instead, everyone chose a place with cheeseburgers and chips, or as I called them, French fries.

It was a few steps up from fast food and a place that Tom and I enjoyed, but I was surprised the rest of the tour group was intrigued by such an American-style menu. I noticed Gunter swoon a little when he saw banana cream pie available for dessert.

The dinner and dessert conversation had been about the sights they’d seen and the places they’d visited that afternoon. All three of them had explored a few closes. Kevin had spent time in one furnished with flowerpots and benches. She’d bundled up and sat under an awning for a while, reading a book and enjoying the quiet. Gunter had explored the Writers’ Museum, and Luka had simply walked around, sampling whisky from a few different pubs.

Rosie had joined us for dinner, and like Tom had, regaled our visitors with stories about growing up in Edinburgh. She also shared with them about when she first started working for Edwin, and how different—though still as wonderful as he was now—he’d been back then, with energy to spare and more good ideas than hours in the day to execute them. Even Tom and I were intrigued by those stories.

Once dessert was finished and everyone either had coffee or something a little stronger, I told them all what had happened over the afternoon, and then asked again if they wanted to change to another hotel.

As I looked at the surprised expressions around me, I quickly said, “I’m asking because I want to make sure you are all okay with staying there. I don’t want you to feel unsafe.”

“We’ve got each other,” Gunter said, his German accent adding strength to his proclamation.

“I never thought about not feeling safe,” Kevin said. “Even with all the strange things.”

“I’m good. We’re good,” Luka added.

“It’s fine, dear,” Kevin added.

I’d been particularly worried about her. She looked better now but had been pale again when I’d met them at the restaurant. She’d insisted she was feeling okay, better every minute.

“It’s a lovely place,” Gunter added. “I don’t think we are in danger.”

“Okay.” A big part of me still wanted to convince them to move, but I understood where they were coming from. “Well, how about tomorrow, then? The schedule got off a bit, but are you up for another half-day of touring?”

“I am not,” Luka said, and then he smiled. “In fact, I would like this to go on for at least a few more days, not just half of another, and this is coming from someone who doesn’t like to take vacations. It’s been perfect.”

“Thank you,” I said.

The others agreed that they wished the tour could go longer. Rosie sent me a knowing nod. We’d talked about the fact that that’s what most of the tour groups said at about this point. She was letting me know I was still on the right pace, despite all the bizarre diversions.
