CHAPTER

FIFTEEN

Curren lost his first game of chess, naturally—and pretty quickly too. He didn’t feel bad about it, though. How could he? When he was getting to spend quality time with his mate, finally. His mate who was turning out to be pretty damn clever.

No, Curren didn’t feel bad. All he felt was admiration. For both the complexities of the game that he was finally learning how to play—and for the man fate had chosen for him. What a fucking fantastic choice. In spite of his nobility, Curren had never counted himself particularly lucky, but he felt lucky to be with Dariel. The man wasn’t only beautiful, he was smart too, and while his stubborn streak could be frustrating to deal with, Curren thought there was something to be said for his determination to stand by his principles.

Dariel took Curren’s king with a smile and a flourish, and Curren fought the urge to grab him and kiss him.

Because he heard steps drawing closer to his chambers, and he knew they were going to be interrupted soon—which was a damn shame, because Curren would have given a lot for a good few uninterrupted hours with his mate. Alas, privacy was a rare commodity for a prince who had a kingdom to take care of.

His advisor knocked before entering, but he didn’t wait for Curren’s response, which told Curren that, whatever it was, it couldn’t wait.

“Your highness.” Sir Tavis gave a short bow. He studied Dariel curiously, but knew better than to comment on Curren’s guest, or on the game they’d been playing.

“Let me guess.” Curren turned away from the chess board. “There’s an urgent matter that requires my attention.”

Sir Tavis glanced at Dariel as if he wasn’t sure how wise it was to speak in front of the stranger.

“You’re free to speak,” Curren allowed.

Sir Tavis nodded. “Lord Balfor has been overheard talking to her majesty Queen Mayve and her son.” He lowered his voice as if this next part was shameful for him to say. “I regret to inform you that Prince Earnan was deemed the winner of this last challenge.”

It was nothing that surprised Curren to hear, but the news dampened his mood nonetheless.

“Rumor has it that the high lord will have you duel Prince Earnan next,” Sir Tavis continued.

Curren grimaced. “Does he intend to take us back to the dark ages?” Nobody dueled seriously anymore.

“It would be a public spectacle.”

Even worse. Curren blew out a breath. The last thing he needed was for the whole kingdom to know of his lack of magical prowess. Was Lord Balfor trying to back him into a corner now that he knew of his affliction?

“It’ll be difficult for you to win that in your current state,” Dariel observed.

“Thank you,” Curren said flatly. What a reassuring vote of confidence.

“Isn’t there any other way to settle this?” Dariel asked. “What does your aunt want?”

“Power.” Wasn’t it obvious?

“Have you tried negotiating with her to see if there’s any way you can get an edge that doesn’t rely
