Chapter 10

Finn ended up coming with us. I guess we’re all subject to peer pressure and even though I don’t think he really saw us as peers, he seemed unable to leave us behind when he knew we’d be doing something that fell into his “domain.”

“He’s not evil,” Felix said. Finn was striding ahead, broad-shouldered and brave. I kind of wanted to sneak up behind him and shove my foot into the joint of his knee.

“I never said he was evil. He’s self-righteous and arrogant,” I lied. I had called him evil. I didn’t really believe it, but I liked to say it just because he irritated me so much.

“He is those things,” Felix said and then he took my hand. He wove his fingers through mine and I couldn’t help but take a moment to revel both in the feeling of his hand in mine and the surety that I’d been certain of Felix and Chrysie. I knew, without question, that they’d help me with this spell. It didn’t matter that we were in a graveyard, in the middle of the night, in a town where some seriously shady crap happened in graveyards. It didn’t matter that we had known each other only a few months.

I was so grateful that they were here. This was a coven spell, and I needed them. Being able to count on them was priceless. We had made bundles of the herbs and drew a pentacle around the entirety of the graveyard. Making that kind of pentacle should have been impossible, but many things were possible with magic and practice. Yet again, my mother and her forced pentacle practice paid off. I had told her that no one would ever need a pentacle bigger than one for a few people. I wouldn’t be calling her later to tell her that she was right and I was wrong. I’m sure she already knew.

Regardless, we drew the pentacle with salt, dried sage, holly, and mullen. Hopefully, the magical effects of the herbs grown with magic would work on the graveyard. I felt the pentacle snap into place as I stepped into the graveyard. We worked as a team, each of us simultaneously drawing the runes for cleansing, renewal, peace, power, and protection. In the center, I wrote the rune for family. Each of my friends lit their bundle of herbs at the points of the pentacle and let them burn to ash. And then I did the same. While the herbs were burning, we linked our magic, and it all fed into me in the center of the pentacle.

The linking gave me insight into each of my friends in a way I never expected. With Chrysie I saw loyalty and hunger. With Felix, I saw love and strength. With Ponytail, I saw protectiveness and dedication. With Finn though. Gods, with Finn I saw righteousness and stalwartness. I could see why the Hallow Family Council had put their hooks into him. He was a powerful source of good.
