DAWN

The night had been incredible. The morning...not so much.

As soon as Dawn had asked Zandyr to sleep in her bed—which was technically his to begin with—the Light in his chest had lit up.

He’d been happy and it made her giddy just thinking about it.

She’d snuggled up to his chest while they’d ignored his fiery hands and how much both of them wanted them tangled up in her hair, and talked themselves silly until Dawn couldn’t keep her eyes open.

With Ceelan curled up at their feet, they went over their childhoods—Zandyr’s had been heinous, from the small, wretched details he’d shared, and Dawn’s had been loving, but caged—their ambitions—he’d already accomplished most of his, while she still hadn’t quite figured out hers—and everything in between.

His favorite color was green. Shocking.

She’d fallen asleep cradled in the crook of his elbow, listening to his steady, precise breaths.

At one point in the night, a storm had gotten so vicious, Dawn had flinched awake.

She’d been on her side, her back to Zandyr’s chest, and his arms wound tightly around her waist, Ignited fingers barely touching the underside of her breasts. It was such an intimate, comfortable position, like they’d been spooning for centuries.

“Are you okay?” he’d asked, his voice husky from sleep and his hot breath ghosting across the shell of her ear.

“I am.” She’d smiled as his hold on her tightened.

She felt safe in his arms, there was no other way to explain it.

As another boom had rocked the sky, Ceelan had whimpered and snuggled closer to them. The panther might’ve looked all kinds of deadly and vicious, but he was one big softie—who was terribly afraid of loud noises.

Soon enough, Ceelan had his back glued to Zandyr’s, and had purred himself to sleep once more.

“You’ve spoiled him,” Dawn had mumbled. Zandyr, big, bad Quillon Ambassador, was also kind of a softie, wasn’t he?

“I like spoiling the ones I care about,” he’d whispered, voice so low and raspy, Dawn had wanted to forget all about her reservations, turn around, and kiss the Quillon daylights out of him.

But she knew she wouldn’t have stopped at just one kiss. She wanted more. She was sure she was ready for more.

But more could wait until she wasn’t so sleepy, sinful visions drawing her away from reality.

Zandyr’s warmth had lulled her back to sleep quickly.

She’d woken up from another one of those dreams—she’d been riding Zandyr and moaning so hard, she was sure someone, somewhere, must’ve heard her thoughts—when a terrible bang had vibrated through the room.

Dawn bolted upright, sheet pooling around her waist. Zandyr wasn’t in the room, but his side of the bed was still warm.

Ceelan whimpered and snuggled closer to her as another bang echoed through the house, followed by a zap of electricity.

The acva in the floor flickered, then dimmed, like a lightbulb going out. It got eerily quiet outside, too, like something had been buzzing until now and Dawn had only become aware of it now that it had vanished.

Shouts resounded from the floor below, in a language her translator couldn’t make sense of.
