FOURTEEN

THE DIRECTOR

“Oh, oh, I’m sorry. Did you think you won or something?” the Director said, prodding a submissive Doctor Shields in front of him. “Did you think this little coup of yours was going to work?”

He knew he had him just by the stupid look of shock on his face. The Draconian next to Frank bristled and prepared to charge.

“I wouldn’t if I were you.” The Director winked. “One word and I could have the good doctor here kill herself. You don’t believe me? Doctor Shields, show them.”

Doctor Shields moved like a robot as she produced a compact blaster from her lab coat and pressed it to the right side of her head.

“Maybe she managed to wake you all from your treatment, but her conditioning goes much deeper.” The Director grinned. He pointed his right pointer finger in the air and wagged it back and forth. “No, no, no, I don’t think it’ll be as easy as you may have thought.”

“Let her go,” Frank said through gritted teeth. “I don’t know who you are and I don’t know why you’re doing this, but you don’t have to make her kill herself to get your point across. And if you do kill her, there’s nothing stopping me from tearing your heart out.”

“My, my, so the Arilion Knight has claws even without his famed vambraces,” the Director crooned. “How interesting. What did you think was going to happen? You were just going to take over my facility and walk off into the sunset? Did you think it was going to be as easy as that? Please, don’t even answer that; obviously, you did. I expected better from you, Frank Wolffe, really I did.”

“Sorry to disappoint,” Frank answered. “But just wait. I may change your opinion of me yet.”

“I highly doubt that,” the Director said, rolling his eyes. He massaged his face mask where it began to droop at the corners of his lips. “Eve, is the riot team here yet?”

Eve’s robotic voice filled the hall from everywhere and nowhere at once. “Yes, Director, they are gearing up now and will be taking the elevator down in minutes.”

The Director shook his head again as Frank and Remo looked around at the ceiling, amazed to hear the artificial intelligence’s voice.

“Good, thank you, Eve,” the Director said with another of his signature smiles. “No, all there is to do is wait until my forces come to quell this little rebellion. They have orders to kill and they won’t be carrying those puny stun batons; they’ll be in full armor with a heavy arsenal of rifles and pulse blades. You think this is the first time this has happened? There are protocols for everything.”

“Why,” Remo growled. “Why are you doing this?”

“Oh good, an actual intelligent question for once,” the Director said, placing his arms across his chest. “You still don’t know what this place is? This whole planet is filled with facilities like this holding heroes from across the universe. My employer is paid well to make sure you never escape while your enemies run free.
