Chapter 13

Left Out of All the Fun

“Are they okay?” Tab asked.

“Hilda will be fine. She’s exhausted and suffering blood loss, but she’s hooked up to some IVs with silver leaf and fluids. She just needs to rest. Murmur and Sarah are both really banged up. They had to reset Murmur’s jaw, and Sarah has some broken fingers, ribs, and some scarring from burns. There aren’t any signs of internal bleeding, but they have them on silver leaf and a few other things. They’ll be monitored closely, but for the moment, they are at least stable. The crones are still looking at the other guy. Now what the fuck happened?”

“I can’t know for certain,” Tab said. “Sarah and Murmur were awake, at least when we left. They wouldn’t let us leave without the other guy. Murmur couldn’t talk, and Sarah was babbling. We just had to get them out.”

“Where were they being held?”

“In cages in the basement of one of the guest houses on the Gadreal estate. Annabeth was set to marry Theo Gadreal, the patriarch of the family. He’s a friend of the chancellor and the inquisitor.”

“I know who Theo Gadreal is,” Tomas said. “Lecherous bastard, even by fae standards.”

“I was there with Annabeth. I thought I’d do some snooping in the town, and I heard some rumors about the inquisitor being nearby, so I went snooping on the grounds, and I found so much more than I thought was possible.”

“Like what?” I asked, urging Tab on when he paused for a moment.

“It looked like a lab. There were metal tables, surgical tools, and some things I don’t even want to think about what they could have been used for.” He shuddered. “He kept them in cages.” Tab’s voice broke. “Like animals. When we got there, Sarah was strapped to a table. There was so much blood, and they had Murmur’s head in this holster thing that forced him to face her, with his eyes held open to watch as they did whatever it is they did to Sarah. I can’t…”

His face paled, and he shook.

I pulled Tab into a hug as he sobbed. The only thing I could hear over Tab was the thundering of my heart in my ears. Heat swam up my body, not the pleasant heat that filled me before. This was different. This was an inner fire that burned. I wanted to make anyone who had even thought of hurting Sarah or Murmur burn.

“It’s all my fault,” he cried into me, wrapping his hands around my waist and holding on to me.

“It’s not your fault,” I soothed, running my hand over his head. “The blame lies solely with the people who did this to them. You didn’t do this to them. You found them. Without you, they would still be there, and we would have no idea where to look for them.”

I pulled his head back so I could look into his watery, bloodshot eyes. I had never seen Tab look anything less than perfect, maybe a little tired, but still strong and put together.
