A couple of hours later, Leah was in her hut for the evening. Door locked. Tristan guarding outside. Despite having traveled miles and miles that day, she paced the small floor space of her room.

She wanted to ask Dominick everything. When was the last encounter with Griffin? When was the first? How did he ever find the centaur camp? How many tribe members had he killed?

And those were just the questions surrounding him. What about the wards, which were powered by faerudite? What in hellfire was that? Why was it named after faeries? Where were the faeries?

Besides, she still knew little about the centaur tribe itself. She didn’t know if they had surnames, or why they kept themselves secret from humanity.

There was too much to know. She knew if she stayed, she could learn it all with time. But she wasn’t ready to commit to this lifestyle and forget everything from her human past.

However, she did have a kind, handsome centaur outside her hut she could talk to.

Leah grabbed the fur from her bed and wrapped it around her shoulders, then unlocked and opened her door. Tristan looked over his shoulder at her.

“Everything all right? You feel frustrated,”

Right. He probably felt her emotions even through the thick walls of the hut.

“I have too much on my mind.” She closed the door behind her and sat on the grass with her back against the building.

“You should stay inside.”

“I’ll go in if anything happens. I was actually hoping we could talk. I mean… Our first meeting didn’t go the way I wanted it to. I’d like it if we started over.” Her cheeks turned pink. She hoped he couldn’t see the flush in the darkness.

Tristan chuckled. “All right. A quick reintroduction, then. I’m on guard, you know.” He came to her side and knelt onto his forelegs, then held out his hand. He wore a gauntlet with a blue stone embedded in it, she noticed. “I’m Tristan Evergreen. Nice to meet you,” he said, not breaking eye contact.

“Leah Miller.” She stuck her hand out from within the fur. They shook. His hand was warm, his skin calloused…but his touch was gentle. Leah swore he rubbed his thumb across the back of her hand.

Tristan stood and returned to his post, glancing back over his shoulder at her briefly.

“Evergreen, huh? Are you part tree?”

He grinned. “Centaur clan names usually come from nature. We’re a forest tribe, so we all have forest names.”

“Are there tribes that don’t live in the forest?” Leah asked.

“Sure.” He shrugged. “Centaurs live on a few continents, in different environments. Don’t humans?”

Leah nodded, though she realized he wasn’t looking at her while he was guarding. “Good point. So, are there any other Evergreens in the tribe?”

“Cormac is my blood brother. We share the Evergreen name.”

“Does that make Sophie an Evergreen?” Leah tilted her head.

Tristan furrowed his brow and shook his head. “No. They’re lovers, not siblings. Why would she have his name?”

“Oh.” Leah’s pink cheeks turned crimson. The world lover alone… “Well, when two humans get married, the woman takes the man’s surname.
