âAria?â
I jerked at a touch to my shoulder, pulling away while my left fist aimed for the offender⦠who just so happened to be Seke.
âShit! Never grab a girl from behind unless you want to get hit,â I scolded.
âEspecially one I have trained to do so,â Seke quipped without missing a beat before sobering, his smoldering hazel eyes meeting mine.
âJust let me go.â I wrenched away, resuming my dramatic exit.
âWhen did you see a vampire? Aria. Please.â
The reminder of the encounter, of the death, of the coldness⦠I shivered. Maybe it couldnât hurt to have the HD taking out the vamps. Itâd keep the HD busy and reduce the number of vamps on my tail. I stopped walking. âAt the house.â
Seke had already caught up. Guess he was taking my âStalk me if you wantâ taunt at its face value. âWhat house? You were assigned to a hospital unit last, were you not?â
I turned to face him. âI was, but that definitely wasnât a good fit. So, that was when I decided that I didnât want to be a Harbinger of Death anymore.â
My anger rose back up as I watched Seke. He seemed to be more worried about everything other than me. His attention jumped all around, from the sidewalk to the cars to the motel. A skinny, greasy-looking dude exited the room a couple of doors down, holding Sekeâs attention much better than I did. My former captain gave zero response to my revelation, to the idea that I didnât want to be a banshee anymore.
Fine. Trust your instincts, Aria.
My instincts told me to move on. Being around Seke and the HDPU had done only one thing for me: get me caught.
Twice.
I turned around to depart again.
âCome back with me.â Seke wrapped lithe fingers around my wrist and tugged me to a stop then a few steps backward.
Seeing as my body was stiff, waiting for a command that my processing mind wasnât delivering, I tripped over the threshold.
Is the room darker? The shadows were responding to Sekeâs emotions⦠whatever they were.
âCome back with me. Iâll persuade the director that the HDPU is the best place for you, especially now that the vampires have found you.â The pinch between his brows was back. It extended to his lips as well, which were pursed in thought. His strong, tan fingers stroked his dark, groomed beard absently as he spoke.
My eyes narrowed. âWhat do you mean ânow that the vampires have found youâ?â Had he known all along they were looking for me? Had he known what theyâd done to other banshees⦠to my parents?
âSit,â Seke sighed, steering me to the bed and knocking me backward when I didnât take the hint, nearly bouncing me off the unyielding mattress.
âOw.â I glared from my newly seated position, deciding that he didnât deserve my words until he gave me some first. And if he didnât, Iâd be out of there. My fingers gripped the gaudy floral monstrosity pulled back from the stark-white sheets that probably harbored more than their fair share of hidden stains.
