Like the divers, reporters were searching too. They weren’t satisfied with the information NASA was providing. They believed NASA knew more than it was saying.

Hugh Harris was doing his best to help them. He led reporters to the massive warehouse where shuttle pieces were collected. From its nose cone to giant chunks of fuselage and rounded sections of the SRBs, the pieces were displayed altogether to resemble the craft’s original shape. As Harris walked reporters along the collection of pieces, he pointed out a portion of the right SRB where the burn had come through. Reporters took photos and asked questions.

“Any sign of the crew cabin?” someone asked.

After six days, more than 11 tons of material had been brought in. The entire craft weighed 2,250 tons, so there was a lot still missing. But most importantly the crew cabin and the crew were still among the lost.

“Unfortunately, no,” Harris said. He understood their need to know. He wanted to know too.
